- WDM: 3D Wavelet Diffusion Models for High-Resolution Medical Image Synthesis Due to the three-dimensional nature of CT- or MR-scans, generative modeling of medical images is a particularly challenging task. Existing approaches mostly apply patch-wise, slice-wise, or cascaded generation techniques to fit the high-dimensional data into the limited GPU memory. However, these approaches may introduce artifacts and potentially restrict the model's applicability for certain downstream tasks. This work presents WDM, a wavelet-based medical image synthesis framework that applies a diffusion model on wavelet decomposed images. The presented approach is a simple yet effective way of scaling diffusion models to high resolutions and can be trained on a single 40 GB GPU. Experimental results on BraTS and LIDC-IDRI unconditional image generation at a resolution of 128 times 128 times 128 show state-of-the-art image fidelity (FID) and sample diversity (MS-SSIM) scores compared to GANs, Diffusion Models, and Latent Diffusion Models. - WDiscOOD: Out-of-Distribution Detection via Whitened Linear Discriminant Analysis Deep neural networks are susceptible to generating overconfident yet erroneous predictions when presented with data beyond known concepts. This challenge underscores the importance of detecting out-of-distribution (OOD) samples in the open world. In this work, we propose a novel feature-space OOD detection score based on class-specific and class-agnostic information. Specifically, the approach utilizes Whitened Linear Discriminant Analysis to project features into two subspaces - the discriminative and residual subspaces - for which the in-distribution (ID) classes are maximally separated and closely clustered, respectively. The OOD score is then determined by combining the deviation from the input data to the ID pattern in both subspaces. The efficacy of our method, named WDiscOOD, is verified on the large-scale ImageNet-1k benchmark, with six OOD datasets that cover a variety of distribution shifts. WDiscOOD demonstrates superior performance on deep classifiers with diverse backbone architectures, including CNN and vision transformer. Furthermore, we also show that WDiscOOD more effectively detects novel concepts in representation spaces trained with contrastive objectives, including supervised contrastive loss and multi-modality contrastive loss. 4 authors · Mar 13, 2023
- DiTEC-WDN: A Large-Scale Dataset of Water Distribution Network Scenarios under Diverse Hydraulic Conditions Privacy restrictions hinder the sharing of real-world Water Distribution Network (WDN) models, limiting the application of emerging data-driven machine learning, which typically requires extensive observations. To address this challenge, we propose the dataset DiTEC-WDN that comprises 36,000 unique scenarios simulated over either short-term (24 hours) or long-term (1 year) periods. We constructed this dataset using an automated pipeline that optimizes crucial parameters (e.g., pressure, flow rate, and demand patterns), facilitates large-scale simulations, and records discrete, synthetic but hydraulically realistic states under standard conditions via rule validation and post-hoc analysis. With a total of 228 million generated graph-based states, DiTEC-WDN can support a variety of machine-learning tasks, including graph-level, node-level, and link-level regression, as well as time-series forecasting. This contribution, released under a public license, encourages open scientific research in the critical water sector, eliminates the risk of exposing sensitive data, and fulfills the need for a large-scale water distribution network benchmark for study comparisons and scenario analysis. 4 authors · Mar 21
- Sicilian Translator: A Recipe for Low-Resource NMT With 17,000 pairs of Sicilian-English translated sentences, Arba Sicula developed the first neural machine translator for the Sicilian language. Using small subword vocabularies, we trained small Transformer models with high dropout parameters and achieved BLEU scores in the upper 20s. Then we supplemented our dataset with backtranslation and multilingual translation and pushed our scores into the mid 30s. We also attribute our success to incorporating theoretical information in our dataset. Prior to training, we biased the subword vocabulary towards the desinences one finds in a textbook.
